How to Get Better at Asking for Help

In the United States, we have a prevailing “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps” mentality. It is an attitude of self-sufficiency and independence that serves us well in some areas but can also lead to anxiety and declining mental health when we forget how to ask for help or rely on our community for support. 

Anxiety is an unpleasant emotional state that causes people to worry excessively about things that might happen in the future. It often leads to physical symptoms like stomach aches, headaches, and difficulty sleeping. If you find your anxiety, depression, loneliness or other mental health symptoms have escalated recently, you may need to get better about asking for help. 

Here are five tips for getting more support around the stresses and challenges in your life:

  1. Understand Why You Don’t Ask for Help
    If you find yourself worrying about whether you will receive help when you need it, then you may not be asking for help when you really need it. People who struggle with anxiety often avoid seeking help because they fear being judged or rejected by others. They also believe that they must be able to handle difficult situations themselves.
  2. Think About How You Might Benefit from Asking for Help
    There are several reasons why people don’t ask for help. One reason is that they think they should be able to handle things on their own. Another reason is that they don’t want to appear weak or needy. Yet another reason is that they don’t want to admit that they cannot solve a problem alone. Instead of focusing on the negative things that might happen if you reach out for support, make a list of how you could benefit from having other people help carry your burden.

Also, try reaching out to a professional counselor or therapist. These professionals can provide guidance and support as well as practical solutions to your problems.

    Asking for help is a skill that needs to be practiced in order to feel natural and comfortable. Ask for help when you need it. Don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed before seeking assistance. By starting with seeking support for something small, you can work your way up to bigger items.
